Desks for new children’s Christian education programs in five communities

1420The Children’s Christian Education Program has grown to more than 700 children. Each of the 23 ILSN congregations has a Christian education or feeding program for children. In some communities the children’s school desks are used for classes, in the worship services, and as tables for lunch. Five new communities need 25 desks each for the 2014 Children’s Christian Education Program—a total 125 desks. Each desk costs approximately $25.50.

I want to help provide desks for the new children’s Christian education programs.

Electronic theological library for Central America church workers

1421A functional, integrated computer network at LCC’s mission centre in Nicaragua would benefit all church workers serving in Central America when they visit for continuing education, conventions, meetings, seminars and events. This project will help fund the computers and networking equipment needed to fulfill this mission.

I want to help provide computer access to Spanish theological resources in Central America.

Support for Thai missionary Rev. Suchat Chujit

1422Missionaries Suchat Chujit and Suchat Srikakan continue their missionary work in the southern province of Thailand in the region of Takuapa and Phang-nga province. As Pastor Chujit provides ministry for his local congregations he continues reaching out to individuals and families in the area, building contacts for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and starting home Bible studies and worship services. This project helps provide the stipends, utilities, transportation, telephone and worship materials for the congregations and preaching stations under missionary Chujit’s care.

I want to help support the ongoing ministry and outreach of Pastor Chujit.

(Project 1422) Goal: $8700

Seminary program in Odessa

1423Currently, four students are enrolled for the next series of seminary course scheduled to start in September 2014. At its recent convention, the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine (SELCU) opened the door for other churches in Eastern Europe to send their students to the seminary in Odessa. This is seen as a great opportunity for SELCU to expand its connection with other Lutheran churches and become a regional centre for theological education. This project contributes towards food, travel, utilities, translators, and a cook at the seminary.

I want to help support pastoral preparation in Ukraine.

(Project 1423) Goal: $10,000

Mission and ministry to prisoners

1424A team of missionaries from the Synod of Evangelical Churches in Ukraine (SELCU) started a mission in two high-security prisons in Nikolaev province. Missionary Rev. Alexander Urchenko and Deacon Sergey Bondarenko visit the prison weekly, holding services and enjoying fellowship. This project will cover transportation costs, literature and provide help for the inmates including medicine, tea, warm clothes, books and food.

I want to help support Christian outreach to prisoners.

(Project 1424) Goal: $1050

Vacation Bible school and seasonal Bible camps

1425This project supports vacation children’s camps (VBS) where up to 250 children take part, a summer camping program where nearly 110 young people participate, and a winter youth conference which gathers groups from SELCU congregations for worship, fellowship and study at the Odessa Theological Seminary. This work with children and youth is very important to the church in Ukraine.

I want to help support outreach to and ministry with young people.

(Project 1425) Goal: $6000

Outreach to athletes in Dnepropetrovsk

1427Under the supervision of LCC missionary Rev. Alexey Navrotsky and in conjunction with theAlpha and Omega Student Society, a group of Christian sportsmen works with non-Christian sportsmen. For several years their Christian professional trainer, Igor Solodenko, has worked with a team of soccer players. This ministry reaches approximately 80 young sportsmen. The project provides support for equipment, transportation and facility/field rental.

I want to help share the Gospel with athletes.

(Project 1427) Goal: $1260

Outreach to college and university students in Odessa

1426For more than three years the pastor of the church in Odessa, Rev. Oleg Shevchenko, and a team of volunteers has conducted an evangelism ministry with college and university students in Odessa. Each week they hold Bible studies and organize various special projects: thematic evenings, discussion clubs, hikes, conferences and competitions. This project supports the purchase of Christian literature, printed materials for meetings and the rental of facilities.

I want to help reach out with the Gospel to students.

CLMS Meets in Edmonton to set 2014 goals

CLMS board

CLMS Board meets in Edmonton to set 2014 project goals

EDMONTON — The Board of Directors of the Concordia Lutheran Mission Society (CLMS) met January 30-February 2 in Edmonton to plan for the coming year. The major focus was on selecting mission projects CLMS would commit to support through 2014. President Cliff Haberstock said to the Board, “We do have a partnership in the Gospel. We are partners in mission. I don’t only mean that for the ten of us on the Board; we are partners in mission with all who pray with us and and give their gifts of finances and time and talents. Without them and their response to the grace of God in their lives, we would have no purpose for existing as a board. But also without us, they would not have the opportunity to give to missions in the specific ways we provide. So it is not just about us; it is about all of the partners: board and donor members working together in GOD’S MISSION to save the world.”

With that in mind, CLMS committed to raise $135,000 over the coming year for 27 projects in six different countries, including Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Ukraine, Thailand, and Canada. $16,000 of our goal will go to complete three projects carried over from 2013 because they are committed to complete every adopted project even if it means extending our fund raising into the following year. CLMS will be supporting 24 new projects including Vacation Bible Schools, summer camps and Children’s Christian Education programs, motorbikes for deaconesses in Thailand, the seminary program in Ukraine, temporary shelter for a new mission in Nicaragua, missionary and deaconess support in central America and Thailand, ministry to prisoners, university students and athletes, a medical and dental clinic, and other challenging needs on the mission field. They will also support Lutheran theological training for one of the leader on our mission field (likely from Ukraine).

The Rev. Roland Syens, Board member and former missionary to Ukraine, preached at a Mission Festival on February 2. The mission offering received at that event nearly provided full funds to an outreach to university students in Odessa. When their deliberations were complete, the Board enjoyed a tasty dinner of Central American food and fellowship in the Haberstock home.

CLMS is an Auxiliary organization of Lutheran Church–Canada and helps fund many of its mission projects. For further information on the projects CLMS has committed to support in 2014, see the Concordia Mission Advocate supplement in the March/April issue of The Canadian Lutheran. For more information on CLMS, visit www.concordiamissions.org

“All thanks and praise belongs to God for our faithful partners in mission who continue to support CLMS mission projects with their gifts and prayers. We have an exciting year ahead with the gifted people God has brought together on our Board.”
